Overcoming Rejection with Bestseller T.J. Newman

Bestseller T.J. Newman has proven that you can write in any situation given enough dedication. Not only did she write her debut novel, Falling, on a notepad while working long hours as a flight attendant, but also pushed through over forty rejections before landing a publishing deal. Falling, Newman’s first and only novel about a perilous mid-flight decision, has won critical acclaim from the likes of James Patterson and Lee Child for its suspense and original plot. To order Falling, which hits shelves tomorrow, follow the link below.

From Amazon.com:

T.J. Newman, a former bookseller turned flight attendant, worked for Virgin America and Alaska Airlines from 2011 to 2021. She wrote much of Falling on cross-country red-eye flights while her passengers were asleep. She lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Morning guys, so I tuned in for the news today, it was sad about Miami. But you didn’t mention the football (soccer to you guys) and shock horror, you didn’t even mention the weather. What kind of news program is this?
Great interview today. Wow 40+ rejections. That is an impressive show of persistence and self-belief and ability for getting the deals. Stephen King only got 30 rejections for Carrie and JK only got 12 rejections for the first Harry Potter.
TJ must have written a good book and have a lot of self-belief to have got her deals. As your podcast motto says ‘It all starts with a good book’. Impressive.
So the lesson of today is a good book, self-belief and persistence.
But I can see a problem with the marketing for the film. It probably won’t make an ideal in-flight movie.
    Great show.

Ha! I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe they can show it on cruise ships 🙂

Some years ago I wrote two novels, submitting them to Mills and Boon, both were returned with a letter. Several weeks later I attended a seminar locally, and a question was asked ‘What does Mills and Boon mean by saying find another publisher’ which is exactly what I got for my two novels. The reply was that they were good enough for publishing, but not for them. This gave me the incentive to continue writing. Fortunately, both have now been published. My advice is don’t give up. You’ll get there in the end. I have two more novels at publishers, and the long wait begins again. (One of the novels I have already had an offer of a contract, but like so many they want the earth in payment.)
