About J.D. Barker

Award-Winning Suspense Author J.D. Barker

A New York Times and international bestselling author whose books have been translated into two dozen languages, J.D. Barker has had a love of writing since he was a child. While he initially gravitated toward the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, it wasn’t long before he started admiring the works of Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Edgar Allan Poe. J.D. Barker began writing his own horror-suspense stories with supernatural elements and, after graduating high school, attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. He started writing for 25th Parallel Magazine as well as multiple national publications, including Teen Beat and Seventeen

J.D. Barker honed his craft as a ghostwriter and book doctor, helping fellow authors finalize their stories for publication. He also published several short stories, including “Among Us” (Dark Crossing Magazine), “Wicked Ways” (Hidden Fears Magazine), and “Room 108” (Hidden Fears Magazine). He independently published his first novel, Forsaken, in 2014. It was a finalist for a Bram Stoker Award and won the Apple E-Book Award for Excellence in Independent Publishing.

Since then, Barker has published several other novels, including The Fourth Monkey (2017), She Has A Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be (2020), and The Noise (2021). He co-wrote The Noise with James Patterson, who has called J.D. Barker “a one-of-a-kind writer” whose work reminds him of Stephen King. Entertainment One optioned The Noise, one of three novels Barker has written with Patterson. Their most recent collaboration, Death of the Black Widow (2022), was an instant New York Times bestseller.

Barker has won several awards for his writing, including a pair of Earphones Awards for The Sixth Wicked Child (2019) and The Fifth to Die (2018), and his books have sold in more than 150 countries. He counts King, John Saul, and Dean Koontz among his influences.
