Laughing at Christine’s comment about all good Canadians having a chainsaw in their garage because it’s so true.
Jenna’s question about why some authors weren’t okay with Etsy shops making swag (bookmarks, earrings, etc) based on their books – it was tied to covers. Authors didn’t have the licensing for those covers for merchandise. It’s a very different release, and authors were worried that they would end up being charged by their designers or the photo licensing sites. The Etsy shops were essentially stealing their covers to make these items.
Also, yes, it seems very sweet to have fans make things based on your books, but what if the author had plans to make their own? These shop owners were making things that were unauthorized, limiting the author’s ability to earn income from their own IP.
